Ethical Issues in Biology, Technologies

Center for Inquiry–Florida hosts its third annual conference,
“How Will Our Democracy Survive? Progress in a Regressive Society!”

Miami Beach, Florida, February 11–13, 2005 at the Deauville Beach Resort: Elaine and Richard Hull, award winning educators and prolific authors, will discuss current ethical issues relating to biology and the new reproductive technologies. Scientific facts, rather than “popular misinformation” about the moral status of pre-embryos and embryonic stem cells, are part of the seminar.

Florida State University’s Dr. Elaine Hull, expert in the neurophysiology of male sexual behavior, will cover current understanding of the processes of reproduction in her talk. Lois Baker in “University at Buffalo Reporter” wrote, “[She is] a psychologist who specializes in brain function …. By the end of the '90s, she and doctoral students in her biobehavioral brain research laboratory at [SUNY Buffalo] had turned the conventional wisdom on sexual function and sex differentiation on its ear.”

The newly revised Ethical Issues in the New Reproductive Technologies, Prometheus Books, is editor Richard Hull’s applicable work. Dr. Hull is professor emeritus of philosophy at the State University of New York at Buffalo.

To counteract a growing religious extremism, decline in scientific literacy, and politically and religiously motivated attacks on science, Center for Inquiry, through this conference and other public educational events, stresses objective reason and demonstrated facts over speculation and subjective passivism. The solid ethical values of Humanism are also explored.

February 11–13, 2005 at the Deauville Beach Resort in Miami Beach, Florida.

Pre-registration is required: 1-800-398-7571 or www.cfiflorida.org/events.
