African-Americans for Humanism – Open Board Meeting

Norm R. Allen, Jr., executive director of African-Americans for Humanism, will host an open AAH meeting at the Center for Inquiry Third Annual Conference in Miami Beach. The meeting will be held at the Deauville Beach Resort on Friday, February 11 at 3 p.m. Topics will include discussing a 2006 celebration of Martin Luther King Day, AAH aims and objectives, fostering humanist ideals among people of African descent, and a Q&A session. Mr. Allen is editor of African-American Humanism: An Anthology, and deputy editor of Free Inquiry magazine. This meeting is free and an open public forum, though space is limited.

The need for critical thinking skills and a humanistic outlook in our world is great. This is no less true in the Black community than in others. Many African-Americans have been engulfed by religious irrationality, conned by self-serving "faith healers", and swayed by dogmatic revisionist historians. Many others, however, have escaped the oppression of such delusions and live happy and upstanding lives free of superstition. African-Americans for Humanism (AAH) exists to bring these secular humanists together, to provide a forum for communication, and to facilitate coordinated action. In an irrational world, those who stand for reason must stand together. “Though we must respect people and their right to hold their beliefs, it is wrong and dangerous to assume that we must necessarily respect the beliefs themselves,” says Norm R. Allen Jr., executive director of African-Americans for Humanism.

CFI Florida Third Annual Conference will begin with a reception Friday evening and conference session will run throughout the weekend, February 11-13 at the Deauville Beach Resort. The theme of the conference is “How Will Our Democracy Survive? Progress in a Regressive Society!” Information about the conference and online registration can be found at www.cfiflorida.org/events or call : 1-800-398-7571
